What does a copywriter do?

As a copywriter, I’ve found many people don’t have a clue about what I do. This even extends to my friends and family (so you’re not alone). Due to this, I thought the perfect place to start my writing blog would be to address just that: what is a copywriter?

For many, the art of copywriting is a foreign concept. Some jump to the assumption that copywriting is related to the little copyright “©” symbols you see everywhere. It’s not. Others just draw a blank.

So what does a copywriter do?

In short we write words that sell, pieces of writing which we refer to as copy. Our words are generally created and used for marketing purposes to compel readers to take a desired action. Whether it be the reader is to sign up for an email newsletter or purchase a product, it is the copywriter’s job to make it happen.

This may sound simple enough, but catching and retaining a person’s attention is never easy, especially in today’s saturated market.

Billboards, websites, blogs, newsletters, advertisements, chocolate bar labels, white papers and so much more are all written by a copywriter.

To avoid the plethora of advertising we encounter daily most of us have subconsciously built up walls to block out as many advertisements as we can with only a few trickling through the cracks.

So why hire a copywriter if there’s words everywhere and people want to avoid them?

A trained copywriter creates pieces of copy that break through those barriers, enticing people to read more. This means that the marketing for your business, brand or product is one step closer to generating a quality lead.

So that’s what a copywriter does!
